How to Remember Names (Plus the Best Networking Icebreaker!)

tips Mar 05, 2026

I have the darndest time remembering people's names. For years, I would forget a name two seconds after someone introduced themselves.

But recently, I attended a class by Phil M. Jones (author of Exactly What to Say), and I learned exactly why this happens—and how to fix it.

The Real Reason We Forget Names

According to Phil, the reason we forget names is simple: We aren't actually listening. When we meet someone, we are usually in our own heads—deciding if we like them or stressing over what we are going to say next. The first step to remembering names is to stop making up a story in your head and start actively listening.

3 Tricks to Remember Anyone's Name

Once you are actively listening, use these three techniques to lock that name into your memory:

  • 1. Association: Attach an image, a memory, or a similar-sounding word to their name. Creating a quick mental link makes the name much harder to forget.

  • 2. Repetition: Naturally use their name in conversation right after meeting them. Pro tip: Say your own name twice when introducing yourself to help them out, too!

  • 3. Impression: Take a mental "snapshot" of their face or persona. Focus on a feature that won't change (unlike their hairstyle or outfit) and tie their name to that permanent impression.

The Ultimate Icebreaker: "The Name Story"

If you regularly attend group events, you probably cringe at the word "icebreaker." But there is one networking game that people actually love doing, and it perfectly aligns with remembering names.

It’s called The Name Story.

Instead of an awkward game, you simply go around the room and have everyone share their name and the history behind it. People love talking about themselves, and the stories naturally cement their names in your brain.

My Name Story: The Truth About "Jennie Rebecca"

To show you how it works, here is my story:

I am Jennie. Just J-E-N-N-I-E. (Not Jennifer, Virginia, or Genevieve!). I am named after my great-grandmother, which I always thought was special.

However, my middle name is what really dates me. I am Jennie Rebecca. If you look it up, Barbra Streisand had a song called "Jenny Rebecca," which was actually used as the theme song for the classic Gerber baby food commercials in the 70s! My mom loved it so much, she named me after it.

Because I just told you that story, you are now much more likely to remember that my name is Jennie, I'm a Gen-Xer, and my mom loved Barbra Streisand!

What is Your Name Story?

The next time you host a group event, ditch the awkward games and try The Name Story to build instant, memorable connections.

I would love to hear your story! What is the history behind your name? Let me know in the comments below!
