What to Do When Friends and Family Don't Use You As Their Real Estate Agent
Jul 22, 2026
It is a question that pops up in real estate coaching groups and Facebook forums every single day: What do you do if your friends or family members did not use you as their real estate agent?
Let’s just call it what it is—it stings. It sucks. I have been guiding clients through their real estate journeys for over 25 years here in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and it has absolutely happened to me.
Real estate is a tough industry. Nearly 75% of agents get out of the business in their very first year. Because the failure rate is so high, it hurts deeply when the people closest to you don't automatically trust you to help them. However, if you plan to be in this business for the long haul, you have to develop a thick skin.
Here are three steps to handle the sting and ensure it doesn't happen again.
1. Look in the Mirror (Are You a Professional?)
Before you get upset with your loved ones, you have to look inward. Ask yourself: What was it about our relationship that made them not see me as a trusted professional?
You are asking them to trust you with one of the largest financial transactions of their lifetime. If you are showing up like a "Lucy Goosey" amateur who is just winging it, they are going to notice.
Early in my career, I lost a listing from a mutual friend because I walked into the appointment assuming it was a given. I didn't ask deep questions. I didn't slow down to uncover her goals. I just skipped straight to the paperwork. The agent who beat me out treated the seller like a true professional—and she won the business.
The Lesson: Treat everyone—even your closest friends—like a brand-new client. Prove your value every single time.
2. Focus on What You Can Control
You cannot control who your cousin decides to list their house with. You can control how many new people you talk to today.
When a missed opportunity hurts, allow yourself to feel the sting for a moment, and then pivot your mindset to: Who can I go help today? If you stay consistent in your lead generation, deepen your community relationships, and build a strong pipeline, you won't sweat the small stuff or stress over a single missed transaction.
3. Reevaluate One-Way Relationships
You cannot cut family members out of your life, but you can absolutely reevaluate your friendships.
If you are constantly pouring into a friendship, supporting their business, and being a loyal friend, but you are never receiving real estate introductions or referrals in return, something is off. Reciprocated curiosity and support are the foundation of a healthy friendship. If the relationship is a one-way street, it may be time to mentally reevaluate where that person sits in your inner circle. You can still be cordial and kind, but protect your energy.
Play the Long Game 🐢
I have always joked that I am the tortoise rather than the hare. I am slow, steady, thoughtful, and consistent.
I want my network to know that I am a professional and I am here for them—even if they aren't ready to make a move for another seven or twelve years. Play the long game. Control your mindset, execute your daily activities, and the right business will always find you!
